Women, Money and Power
If you follow Inspiring Women on Facebook, you may have already read this very interesting article in the March 24th Time Magazine. As a contrast to our last BLOG about young girls and their self confidence…read key highlights about women and the impact of our earnings and purchasing power:
1. 4 in 10 working wives outearned their spouses in 2009;
2. Women make up 60% of U.S. college students;
3. Single, childless women ages 22 to 30 in larger U.S. metropolitan cities have a higher median income than their male peers;
4. The domestic division of labor has shifted. Dad’s have become much more hands on over the past generation and are doing a larger share of the domestic chores at home regardless of being a stay at home dad;
5. Wives make the majority of the buying decisions regardless of who earns more in the family.
The author declares within a generation, a majority of working wives will outearn their husbands. So does that mean the 81% gender wage gap goes away and the percent of women in management will increase above 38%?
REMEMBER, Marsha Sampson Johnson, former executive with Southern Company joins Martha for our complimentary Inspiring Women Teleconference tomorrow, the 28th at 11:30 a.m. EST. Register NOW to save your seat! You do not want to miss this call with Marsha!

1 in 5 girls “believe” they have what it takes to lead
Yep – you read it correctly. This research was done by Roper Research and was featured in a GIRL POWER article sponsored by the Girl Scouts. GSUSA is celebrating their centennial year by launching their boldest advocacy campaign in U.S. history! This is a fitting launch for Women’s History month.
The leader of this organization, Anna Maria Chavez states the obvious, “There is a shortage of women in leadership roles and it will take a lot of resources to address it. We have to advocate on behalf of girls…We give more money to animal issues than girl issues.” 2012 has been declared as the “Year of the Girl” with ambitious plans to raise $1 billion to reach more girls through the Girl Scouts.
Here are some impressive stats to endorse the efforts of GSUSA:
69% of female U.S. senators, 67% of female U.S. House of Representatives and 80% of female business owners were Girl Scouts. So in keeping with the GSU spirit, pick a girl to advocate for this year and help support her hopes and dreams. They are our future leaders that will “change the world”.
REMEMBER…we have Marsha Sampson Johnson gracing us with her gifts on March 28th as our Inspiring Women Teleconference guest! Marsha is a writer, speaker and advocate dedicated to full inclusion of women and people of color in all work environments. She is known for her keen insights and no nonsense approach to leadership and navigating careers. Register today to hold your “seat” on our live call with Marsha!

"I just finished reading Inspiring Women and can only say WOW. It was both inspiring and joyful to read. You have captured THE critical leadership trait in a clear and relatable fashion…self awareness. The fact that it is also the key to personal growth in life is an extra windfall. Your style steps out of the mold to help the reader out of her/his habit patterns. It is artistic and playful in a way that provides depth and breadth to its purpose. Thad’s artwork is quite exceptional and his passion oozes out from each piece. Your book was a real gift to read and I am grateful for the contribution it brings to my own growth."
